An argument between a group of men resulted with two men bludgeoned by a hammer just before 6am outside Stratford station on Tuesday morning.
Witnesses report seeing the suspect who they believe was drugged, approach a group of men and ask for a cigarette.
The group declined and the suspect is believed to have swung a hammer at them striking one of the side of the head and shoulder and the other on his body.
Scared on lookers then watched as the group of men, believed to be Russians wrestled the suspect to the ground and pinned him to the floor until British Transport Police arrived.
The suspect lay on the ground yelling at passer’s by as he was pinned to the ground.
Police arrived on scene and a 26 year old man from East Ham was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm, common assault and possession of an offensive weapon. The hammer was recovered at the scene and the suspect was taken into custody.
Two men have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, one with a laceration to the head and a suspected fractured shoulder and the other with minor injuries.
Shocked on lookers watched the horrifying attack, one told the Enquirer: “It wasn’t even six o clock in the morning and there was a man pinned to the ground and a hammer lying near him. It was really scary.
“These type of incidents are becoming really common here now, people are so used to this. There is always something going on, sometimes its robbery or even the fear of acid attacks. Last week my friend was threatened with a knife and they stole his phone and this morning a random hammer attack. We need more police on the streets.”
Enquiries are now underway and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
