A special service of Remembrance was held at Coronation Gardens by the Normandy Veterans Association on Sunday 22 July.
The event was organised by Colonel Mark Bryant, Havering’s Deputy Lieutenant as a tribute to all the men who fought on the Normandy beaches.
The special service saw Havering VIP’s attend, Romford MP Andrew Rosindell and Hornchurch and Upminster MP Julia Lopez were present to pay their respects.
Mr Rosindell said: “I was very honoured to attend the Normandy Veterans Association of Remembrance on Sunday at Coronation Gardens with Colonel Mark Bryant and Julia Lopez MP, led by the Vicar of Romford, Mike Power. It was a proud day for our town, saluting our brave heroes.
Col Bryant said: “I organised this special event as thank you to all the veterans who lost their lives, the people who went to Normandy had the hardest time and it was their will and their guts that made it all happen, otherwise we wouldn’t be free today.
“I had uncles that were there and it was remembrance for all the veterans who went and for all of those who bare the scars of war and the horrors they had to deal with.”
“There were veterans there, families of veterans there who were deceased. It was an amazing day and now the borough has a special stone where everyone can come and pay their respects to.”
Mrs Edmonds from Elm Park, came to the service to pay her respects and said: “My grandfather fought on the Normandy beaches, he was a very brave man as were all the others who were present there. This is a great way to make sure that they will always be remembered.”
