NEW HOLIDAY IDEAS FOR ACTIVE FAMILIES

Visit the star-shaped town of Naarden in Holland, step back in time in fairytale-like Sintra or discover the less-known Greek island of Naxos with these fun-filled itineraries from UTracks.

Suitable for children as young as 12, the trips below are ideal for active families with teenagers keen to explore the world and make the most of their time together…

Portugal Palaces and Coast Walk

Set amidst pine-blanketed hills, Sintra looks (and feels!) as if it has been plucked straight from a fairytale book. It is Europe’s finest example of whimsical and colourful Romanticism architecture, home to flamboyant palaces, mansions and gardens such as the Palácio da Peno, Castelo de Mouro, the Palacio Nacional, as well as hidden gems like the Arabic-inspired Palacio de Monserrate. Traverse on foot the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park to the rugged and dramatic coastline – dotted with picturesque fishing villages and glorious sandy beaches – for views of the so-called ‘Hell’s Mouth’ and Cabo da Roca, continental Europe’s westernmost point. The trip finishes at Cascais, one of the most popular holiday destinations on Lisbon’s coastline.

• Portugal Palaces and Coast Walk with UTracks (8 days) departs daily year-round, from £495 per person; suitable for active families with children from 12 years old

Santorini and Naxos on Foot.
Known for their bright, whitewashed cube-shaped houses, Santorini and Naxos are two of the most beautiful Greek islands, offering numerous walking opportunities. Having endured one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, Santorini is famous for its postcard perfect sunsets that light up the caldera and the archaeological site of Akrotiri, the so-called ‘Greek Pompeii’; while Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, is home to fertile valleys, immaculate sandy beaches and a lively harbour, as well as Portara, a landmark that dates back more than 2,500 years: this colossal marble doorway (the remains of what is left of a temple dedicated to Apollo) is an icon of the island and the perfect place to watch the sun set.

• Santorini and Naxos on Foot with UTracks (8 days) launches 1 April 2019, with further daily departures until late October, from £570 per person; suitable for active families with children from 12 years old

Amsterdam and Lake IJssel Cycl
Holland may be world famous for its canals but did you know that it is also home to the largest lake in Western Europe? The shallow artificial Lake IJssel (or ‘?sselmeer’) was created in 1932, as part of a major hydraulic project that involved draining parts of the Zuiderzee Bay and building dikes and dams to keep tides and high water out. As you pedal through classic Dutch landscapes (below sea level at times!) the mostly flat route takes you along paved cycle paths and quiet county roads, through old fishing villages and trading towns set around the lake. Visit the star-shaped fortified town of Naarden, explore the ‘cheese town’ of Edam and discover the historical towns of Enkhuizen and Hoorn, which flourished during the Golden Ages with the United East India Company.

• Amsterdam and Lake IJssel Cycle with UTracks (8 days) launches 1 May, with further daily departures until late September, from £795 per person; suitable for active families with children from 12 years old
