Aveley 5, Barkingside 0
GOING into this Ryman One North clash on the back of a run of defeats manager Justin Gardner had called for a win at any price – and got it, though he conceded the margin of victory against a team that ended the match with ten men flattered the home side.
Gardner had injected some new blood into his side by signing Petrit Elbi from Brentwood and the striker marked his return to Mill Field with two goals.
However, a five goal margin of victory looked a world away at half time, when the teams turned around goalless.
The breakthrough came on the hour when Elbi scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Danny Callaway.
Callaway was booked for the incident and received his second yellow and subsequent red minutes later after a crunching tackle on Aryan Tajbakhsh.
The Millers took full advantage with the extra man and went two up on 79 minutes thanks to Isa Hussein scoring with his first touch of the game after being introduced seconds earlier.
An audacious flick from Junior Appiah added a third with five minutes remaining before Elbi got his second of the game from long range to really turn the screw.
Rashid Kamara wrapped up proceedings with a goal five minutes into stoppage
Afterwards Gardner said he was pleased his side had “stopped the rot” and said: “I don’t think it was a 5-0 game because Barkingside were in the game.”
“I said to them at half time if you pass the ball, move forward, get in between their centre halves, you will get goals and they won’t be able to live with you.”
