Firefighters were been called to a fire at an industrial estate in Grays involving a scrap yard unit and a HGV.

The 999 Fire Control Operators received over 75 calls reporting the fire.

Update 2:45pm – The fire is producing a lot of smoke which can be seen for miles around. Residents in the nearby area should close their windows as there is a lot of smoke in the area. Roads nearby have been temporarily closed so firefighters can safely deal with the fire. Please avoid the area if you can. Around 50 residents living very close to the estate were advised to temporarily leave their homes due to the amount of smoke.

Update 3:15pm – Firefighters are tackling the fire and working hard to surround and stop the fire from spreading to the other neighbouring units. The unit is used by a scrap yard and contains a number of scrap cars, white goods and PVC windows.

Update 4pm – Firefighters are continuing to tackle the fire using a number of hoses from a number of different locations around the unit. Firefighters are also using an aerial ladder platform (ALP) to pour water on the fire from above.

Update 4:30pm – Site staff are helping firefighters by using diggers to move items so they can be checked and cooled by the crews.

Update 5:30pm – Shortly, the firefighters who have been at the incident tackling the fire this afternoon will be replaced by six new fire crews who will take over and continue to work to extinguish hot spots and will ensure the whole incident is cooled and safe.

Update 8pm – Four fire engines remain at the scene continuing to dampen down the last remaining hot spots.

The fire investigation has been carried out and it has been found that the fire started accidentally in a pile of scrap electrical items.
