A love affair with a legend
THERE’S not many singers who can perform the songs of the late Whitney Houston and do them justice. Until you watch Belinda Davids on stage that is.
The accomplished South African singer and mum of two will simply blow you away with her effortless vocals that sound just like the legendary star, leaving you with goosebumps.
“When I was 14-years old to start earning some money I performed in clubs. I’ve always had a passion for singing and music and signed to a few record labels that didn’t work out but I never gave up,” she explains.
Houston songs became a fixture in Belinda’s live shows throughout her career. “I think I’ve sung at least one Houston track in almost every live show I’ve ever performed,” she says.
More recently the accomplished singer performed ‘I Will Always Love You,’ on American talent show ‘Showtime At The Apollo’ which showcases aspiring artists in front of what is regarded as ‘the toughest audience in the world.’
When the mention of her singing a Whitney hit was announced, the crowd were rather sceptical but Belinda simply smashed it emulating Whitney’s voice and vocal traits to perfection and received a standing ovation.
Belinda cites Whitney as being her idol so to sing one of her songs at the Apollo where Whitney once performed she was extremely honoured. “I have loved Whitney since I was eight-years old,” she says poignantly.
Crowned as the winner of BBC One’s talent search for the best tribute act in the UK, Belinda Davids is no stranger to being the best of the best. In 2012, she auditioned against over 15,000 hopefuls from all over the world to play the part of her idol, Whitney Houston in a new show designed to showcase her incredible legacy. The show opened to critical acclaim and has since toured the globe.
The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show is the culmination of a life-long connection with the superstar to whom she pays homage.
The glittering production which comes to Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion on 19 April is a joyous celebration of Whitney’s life and work spanning the legend’s extraordinary 40-year career. Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to Belinda performing 21 classic hits such as: I’m Every Woman, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know and I Will Always Love You, accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra and a troupe of dancers.
Belinda is next heading to Moscow and Tel Aviv. “We are busy eight months of of the year with this show,” she explains. I have such a jam-packed schedule. It’s hard to say where is a favourite place to tour as I don’t have a lot of time to see any of the countries we go to, however it’s always nice to go back to my hometown (Cape Town).
“It’s a show that everyone will enjoy. I feel privileged to be able to honour Whitney in such a way.”
