WHEN you think of an American diner you could be thinking of ribs, burgers and shakes and you would be right however Bobby Jo’s Diner in Southend is becoming increasingly more well known for its vegan friendly menu too.
Opposite the seafront with its brightly coloured pink and green décor and chequered floor you could be mistaken for going back to the 50’s as the staff complete the look wearing vintage uniforms too.
Their vegan menu is expanding and we were delighted to sample its delights. Especially the HUGE vegan platter that really could feed a family of four.
Vegan cheesy sticks, breaded mushrooms, vegan beef and vegan chicken nachos and tortillas and as far as we are aware Bobby Jo’s is the only place in Essex and likely further afield to be doing such fantastic options.
We also tried their “fickles” which are deep fried gherkins in batter and they didn’t disappoint.
Our friends went for the cheesy nachos and the non-veggie chicken burger and loved it. William who is just 9 decided to try out the vegan burger – something new for him and he enjoyed it. He even let his sister try a small bite and both exclaimed “It tastes just like a chicken!”
They always have soya milk on offer for those delicious after meal lattes and also have dairy free ice-cream so you can enjoy an ice cream float or dairy free milkshake. We opted for a bubble-gum and Oreo milkshake. Very sweet and delicious.
The portions are generous too – so much so we took half of the food home in a take-away box – an ideal snack for later!
With triple layer vegan chocolate cake and vegan cupcakes too Bobby Jo’s Diner is making Southend even more of a meat free destination and it’s much appreciated.
