A winter wonderland at new heights
WITH Christmas just around the corner many of us are embracing the festive spirit and all the magic that comes with it. So what could be better than a truly enchanting experience – a visit to Lodge d’Argent.
Situated in the heart of London’s Bank area with spectacular rooftop views of the City, Lodge d’Argent is the winter Arctic-themed offering from exquisite French restaurant Coq d’Argent.
For a second year, the restaurant’s fabulous rooftop terraces have been transformed into a pop-up winter wonderland in a collaboration with Cognac producer Hennessy, created to keep visitors enchanted throughout the season until 28 February.
This is very much an apres-ski setting, with gorgeous faux fur throws and blankets covering chairs, snowy décor and twinkling fairy lights – most importantly there’s plenty of outdoor heaters dotted about to keep the winter chill at bay and guests snug and cosy – all that’s missing are the mountains!
I visited with a friend on a busy Saturday evening. Stepping into the private lift on the corner of the EC2 street where we were promptly whisked up to this rooftop haven, escaping the hustle and bustle of London life below.
As well as plenty of seating – in magically lit spaces – the rooftop terrace also boasts two cosy heated igloo tents ideal for groups (6-9 people) to privately hire. A new attraction though this year and in perfect keeping with the Arctic theme is the ‘Aurora Borealis Cube’ a simulated visual experience of The Northern Lights. Step inside take a pew and cuddle up with a loved one and let this natural phenomenon do its work casting majestic green, blue and purple trails of colour across a snowy blanketed landscape.
With the magical backdrop perfectly set – next is to sample Lodge d’Argent’s superb selection of food and drink including a tempting selection of winter warming snacks and Hennessy cocktails – carefully concocted so their vibrant colours reflect the mesmerising hues of the Northern Lights.
Our winter wonderland experience for two began with the most vivid green drink I have ever been served – aptly named Green Sky (it included Hennessy Fine de Cognac, green jasmine infused syrup topped up with sparkling wine) while my friend opted for Star Walk (Hennessy Fine de Cognac, Finca Malbec, crème de figue (fig liqueur) and sparkling Raspberry jam) – both creations were thirst quenching delights which looked as good as they tasted.
These were soon followed by – Arctic Wilderness (Hennessy Fine de Cognac, Muscat, home-made ginger candy syrup and Voodo blue tea which changes from blue, to a brilliant purple colour with just a squeeze of lemon juice) and another ginger-flavoured delight – Husky -Slide-Ride (Hennessy Fine de Cognac, Rakamelo, Pedro Ximenez and ginger bread syrup). It was a slippery slope (no ski-pun intended) not to try them all!
When it came to the winter snacks, a no brainer was to choose two of the sharing dishes – the Savoyard charcuterie platter served with sourdough bread and a whole baked Vacherin cheese with croutons (deliciously gloopy and the perfect French dish for the winter months) – delicious.
Whooshing down the mountains of the Alps may be the epitome of winter fun for many but high-up on a London rooftop a taste of apres ski awaits – snow boots not essential!
