Finding the right beat for your day

Terry on stageMUSIC is the heart of any wedding reception, whether you decide on a band, a string quartet or a DJ, it’s something that you need to really think about.

Luckily, Essex is home to the national award winning best DJ – Terry Lewis.

Terry, from South Woodham Ferrers, got tired of the rat race that is corporate finance and decided to launch a Salsa promotions company, from there he was invited to DJ at weddings and that is when he decided to concentrate on the wedding industry.

Five years later, Terry now has a string of awards to his name and has just scooped the National Best Wedding DJ Award at The Wedding Industry Awards. But, despite the years, Terry says he still doesn’t have a favourite genre of music to play at a wedding.

“It depends on the music you and your guests love to enjoy because it’s your big party, not mine,” says the father-of-four. “And I want to deliver an atmosphere that you and your friends and family will love – It really is all about you.

“So tell me the songs and genres you love the most, it’s also important to know what you dislike so I can focus on the perfect wedding DJ set for you.

“This allows me to match the right floor filling hits to you and your guests setting your reception up for a night to remember.

“I don’t publish my prices outside of a one to one client meeting,” explains Terry when asked about the prices for his DJ sets. “I’m not being secretive but I do things very differently to average DJ’s. In my experience when I give a price, I like to have the opportunity to explain the value that’s included.

“Once I’ve explained what’s included in the various packages I offer, around 90 per cent decide to book my services. In fact when surveyed as part of winning the 2014 Best National Wedding DJ Award, past brides and grooms scored my price 9.8 out of 10.”

Most new couples would go for a nice slow song for their first dance, as it gives them a bit of time to have a little chat and be together, but some couples aren’t too worried about being overly romantic, as Terry explains the strangest request for a first dance was I’m Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO!

Being the nation’s best wedding DJ, we had to ask if Terry has been a DJ for any celebs: “I have not done celebrity weddings but I have done some private parties,” explains Terry. “I can’t say who for obvious reasons, but they’ve included international royalty and people in UK politics.”

Why you should choose songs like your best friends:
“Imagine walking into your wedding reception with your newlywed by your side, and not knowing anyone in the room – would you feel a little isolated and disconnected from the atmosphere? Probably, and if, as your wedding DJ, I play unknown songs or weak hits your friends will wonder what is going on, start to get bored and may leave early as a result.”

The Terry Lewis Way
“Now imagine walking into the same room but this time every single person is a good friend you know and love; they greet and hug you making you feel excited to be there – well these are the feelings and atmosphere we will create by playing the big hits that your friends and family love! The end result is everyone will feel connected, have more fun and together we will create memories they will treasure forever, all because you chose a wedding DJ who cared enough to discover what your friends and family really love to get down to.”
