I’d heard great reviews about Captain Fantastic but didn’t really know what to expect – was it a comedy? A drama? I’m still not quite sure. But one thing is certain, it is a touching film.
Written and directed by Matt Ross, the film stars Viggo Mortensen as Ben, a devoted father who has raised a family of six off the grid in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. His wife has been hospitalised with bipolar disorder but Ben soon receives devastating news that she has killed herself.
Ben makes the decision to take his children on a road trip to New Mexico to attend their mother’s funeral, despite warnings that his father-in-law will have him arrested if he interrupts the ceremony.
But although Ben has taught his children survival skills, he soon realises he’s left them unprepared for the outside world, with some humorous and shocking results! He soon realises that he needs to re-evaluate his children’s upbringing and education.
I left the cinema not knowing whether I should be laughing or crying – one thing’s for sure, it was an emotional rollercoaster that really makes you think.
