WITH the fast paced world of film ever-changing, staff at Empire Cinemas Basildon celebrated at the weekend as the cinema hit its eighteenth birthday.
Empire Cinemas Basildon, now the 9th busiest cinema in the United Kingdom, has had a successful eighteen years, welcoming over 14.5 million visitors to watch over 3000 films so far. A whopping 1.5 million hot dogs sold have also been sold to film fans over the years.
The cinema first opened at Festival Leisure Park as UCI Cinemas on 17th July 1998, with twelve cinema screens. In May 2006, the cinema rebranded as Empire Cinemas and in July 2010, opened a brand new Impact screen and Studios, making it an 18 screen cinema.

Staff member Helen Reeve has worked at the cinema since its opening, and is the only member of the original team at Empire Cinemas Basildon. Cinema Manager Helen said: “It is fantastic to be celebrating eighteen fantastic years of Empire Basildon this July, delivering films to the big screen to Essex residents. Over the years we’ve seen some amazing developments to the cinema including the popular IMAX screen, and along with our great offers and prices, we are now the 9th busiest cinema in the country. Here’s to the next eighteen years!”
Phil Peirce, General Manager at Empire Cinemas Basildon, said “We’ve had an incredible eighteen years of Empire Cinemas Basildon at Festival Leisure Park, with a big thanks to our fantastic team for making it such a success.
As well as celebrating the cinema’s eighteenth birthday this weekend, we have two staff members turning eighteen in July, meaning the cinema had just opened as they were born! The rest of the year is set to be huge for us with an amazing selection of films for 2016 yet to arrive, and we look forward to welcoming visitors old and new.”
