Cray Wanderers 1, AFC Hornchurch 6
URCHINS brushed aside Cray Wanderers as goals from Carl Rook, Rickie Hayles, Elliot Styles, Chris Bourne and a brace from George Purcell sealed an emphatic Ryman Premier victory.
The visitors had already missed several chances before they took the lead on 12 minutes with their fourth corner of the match, when Bourne sent the ball over from the right, and Rook flicked the ball into the net.
Purcell twice had shots cleared, before Hornchurch went further ahead ten minutes later, when Joey May crossed for Rickie Hayles to head home.
And on 24 minutes Styles made it three with a header from another corner.
Leigh Bremner, playing his 300th game for Cray forced a save from Inigo Echepare but Hornchurch were soon back on the attack and Purcell gained possession midway inside the home half, powered forward, and crashed the ball past Walker for a 33rd minute fourth.
And Purcell almost added a fifth before half time, with a fine shot which came back off a post.
Hornchurch’s dominance continued after the break and within eight minutes of the restart a fifth goal followed from a fine solo run by Bourne, who weaved past defenders before crashing the ball into the net.
Cray pulled a goal back just after the hour when a long-range shot was deflected out for a corner. Peter Wedgeworth sent the ball to the near post where Bremner glanced a header into the net.
The come-back lasted for just over one minute, when Inigo fielded the ball, and pumped it deep into the Cray half, where Bourne touched back to Purcell, who calmly placed the ball wide of Andy Walker and into the net.
Inigo was again in action two minutes later, but his challenge for the ball resulted in a penalty. Leigh Bremner stepped up to take the kick, and Inigo dived to his right to save
After that, though Cray did sporadically threaten, the game ebbed to its inevitable conclusion and Hornchurch made the short jorney back over the Thames in very high spirits.
