Campaign launched

The Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust (HAHT) have launched a campaign to establish a permanent home to remember and commemorate RAF Hornchurch and the Hornchurch Aerodrome. RAF Hornchurch played a crucial role in the defence of London across two World Wars.

Bellway Homes, currently developing the site which encompasses the old St Georges Hospital have kindly gifted Sutton’s House to the HAHT which means that the organisation are one step closer to achieving their goal.

Jon Cruddas MP commented: “we’ve just ended 2018 which marked 100 years since the end of World War I. This project is incredibly important and something I hope residents will get behind. This has the potential to be a real asset to the community, remembering past service men and women based at RAF Hornchurch such as Wing Commander John Freeborn who we commemorated with a plaque in Elm Park last October.”

The Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust are desperately looking for public support though donations to overcome some of the biggest challenges in getting Heritage Centre up and running.

They are aiming to raise £10,000 via a ‘GoFundMe’ page and are also in the process of registering as a charity. The money will be used to replace the windows, secure the building, and invest in display cases for exhibits.

Mr Cruddas added: “I know times are hard and people are stretched but I am urging those that can, to support this worthwhile project celebrating the areas proud service and aviation history.”
