A LOCAL business in Thurrock is combining reading, improving literacy and raising money for Children in Need at the same time.

Sounds Right Phonics Classes for Kids, which offers fun and educational phonics classes to pre-school children and toddlers, is supporting Children in Need 2018 and encouraging parents to read to their children whilst doing it.

They will be raising money through a social media campaign to ‘Get Caught Reading,’ encouraging each person to take a picture of themselves and/or their child reading, posting it on Facebook and tagging other people to join in the challenge! Sounds Right will donate £1 for every photo of a child reading that they are tagged in. This year’s Children in Need theme is ‘Do your thing.’

Sally Mann, who runs Sounds Right Phonics in Thurrock and Grays says; “I’m having so much fun getting involved with all the different activities we’ve got going on for Children In Need and so are the children. The focus of our classes is fun and if we get to raise money for charity whilst doing it, then even better.’

“We wanted to raise money for this very valuable charity, and also make it really engaging for the children. We thought this theme fits in really well with Sounds Right Phonics and the parents and children are already really enjoying the challenge.”

“We have seen people reading in their Children in Need t-shirt and headband, outside a motorway service station and even whilst doing a headstand.”

Getting Involved

A parent of a class, Charlotte Larwill, said: “It’s so lovely that the children are getting involved with the reading challenge and raising money for Children In Need whilst encouraging them to read. My little boy absolutely loves the classes and they are always coming up with imaginative ways to entice the children. It’s just fantastic.”

Sounds Right Phonics Classes in Thurrock are also hoping to raise even more money in their classes by hosting a cake sale and asking children to bring their teddy bears along for a teddy bear’s picnic.

Across the country Sounds Right Phonics franchisees are engaging in a range of activities to earn money for Children In Need including a sponsored nursery-rhyme-athon, Pudsey Bear face paint, raffles, guess the name of the bear and much more.
