On Saturday, August 12 our officers, Special Constables and Active Citizens from Southend will be hosting an anti-knife crime event alongside the charity, Only Cowards Carry.

Officers from our Southend Community Policing Team along with Special Constables will be conducting high-visibility patrols in the high-street throughout the day to deter any anti-social behaviour. Local organisations such as The Forum and Southend Business Improvements Districts (BID) will be supporting the patrols. Active Citizens will be supporting the event by liaising with the public, handing out information leaflets and discussing the negative consequences of carrying knives or weapons.

The anti-knife crime charity, Only Cowards Carry, will be hosting a table in The Victoria Shopping Centre from 9am to 5pm. They will be raising awareness of their charity and the work they do alongside officers to deter people from carrying knives, misusing drugs or alcohol and being involved in gangs. Members of the public are welcome to drop in to The Victoria Shopping Centre to chat with our officers or the Only Cowards Carry volunteers about knife crime or any concerns about anti-social behaviour they may have.

Pc James Brewer, from Southend Community Policing Team, said: “This is a great opportunity for Essex Police to work with it’s partners and engage with the public. For me, it is great to have so many volunteers, including Special Constables, Active Citizens and charity volunteers giving up their time to work together to make Southend a safer Place to live and visit.”

Inspector Bill Potter, Southend Community Policing Team Inspector, said: “Knives will ruin lives and it is important that everyone understands their obligation and responsibilities to challenge the sales of weapons just as it is important for our communities to understand the dangers, implications and penalties for carrying them. We are hoping to reach as many people as possible within the town centre on Saturday. It is never easy delivering these type of messages to parents or family members so my message really is quite simple and echoes that of the charity Only Cowards Carry – we all need to educate, deter and prevent people from carrying knives. “
