Havering borough has already recorded its first shooting of the year. On New Year’s day police and ambulances were called to a property in Wych Elm Lane, Hornchurch.

Emergency Services received word of a shooting at 3.42am and arrived to find a man in his 20s shot in the lower back. He was rushed to hospital but in a stable condition.

Armed police attended the scene and the road was cordoned off with residents asked to remain in their properties.

The road was closed for several hours as forensic teams combed the area, and a blue Ford Fiesta was believed to have been spotted with a bullet hole in the side of its door.

Locals reported a police helicopter flying over the scene for a period of time to help on the ground officers.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I think there was a party at the house and I think a man was shot in the back.

“We saw a pile of clothes on the floor and there was a blue Fiesta with what look like a bullet hole in the side of the door. Quite scary really to think it happened just near your house.”
