Developers surprised by demand for houses

Queuing at the door at Highland Park

Home buyers queued for more than two hours, from 7am on Saturday, February 24 in order to buy property by Bellway Homes in South Ockendon as it launched its new development, Highland Park in a show of the desperate need for new housing.
107 people turned out ready for the marketing suite to open at 9am, despite the cold temperatures.
Highland Park comprises one and two-bedroom apartments, and two, three and four-bedroom houses.
The developer launched all plots at the weekend and saw strong interest from first-time buyers using the Government’s Help to Buy scheme and from second-steppers.
The most popular homes to be sold were two-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom houses.
Emma Denton, Sales Director at Bellway Thames Gateway, said: “This development offers the benefit of affordable housing with close commuter times to the capital for professionals, so it was great to see so much interest in our homes in South Ockendon.”
The Enquirer reported last week that Thurrock had one of the highest rates of buyers using the governments Help to Buy scheme.
