With the likes of Duffy and Adele taking a break from music, there’s a new girl on the block who looks set to fill the singing shoes they have left.
But being the newbie is never easy, and singing starlet Rox, has been finding out that the path to fame doesn’t always run smoothly, as she tours the summer festival circuit.
“All my gigs have been going really well,” says the 22-year-old. “I’ve done Underage, Lovebox and Why Not festivals, although I fell over which was quite embarrassing!” she laughs.
“Just the buzz from the stage and getting to play to people who most likely haven’t heard of you before is a lot of fun,” she explains.
“I played Latitude this year and had people coming up to me saying ‘I’ve never heard of you but I’m going to buy your album’ but then I played T in the Park and had to go on stage to people shouting ‘who are ya’, which was mortifying! It’s a risk you take, sometimes it goes well sometimes it goes bad,” she says, honestly.
However Rox has certainly got up and dusted herself off as she prepares for one of her biggest gigs of the summer, performing at Virgin Media’s V Festival in Chelmsford this Sunday.
“It’s my first time at V and I’m really looking forward to it,” she says excitedly. “There’s a really good line up as well, I’m looking forward to seeing Paul Weller, Paloma Faith and Paolo Nutini, who I’ve been a fan of for years but have never had the chance to see him live.”
And you can expect to hear songs from Rox’s new album Memoirs, including her soon to be released single Rocksteady, which is out on 6 September.
“Crowds can expect to hear a young girl’s story and experiences of evolving into an adult, stories of heartbreak and not knowing how to cope but not letting it consume your life at the same time, a lot of different artists inspire me, it’s hard to pinpoint really its sort of a mash up.”
Catch Rox on the Virgin Media Union Stage on Sunday 21 August at V Festival, Chelmsford.
