IF you’re searching for a venue to have a drink with friends and tuck into a hearty dinner, then the Slug & Lettuce in Brentwood fits the bill perfectly.
Situated in the High Street, the bar and restaurant offers the perfect atmosphere for a catch-up with friends and has a fantastically varied menu to boot.
I visited the eatery recently and immediately felt at ease in the contemporary setting. And, as I browsed over the menu it was clear I wouldn’t be going hungry.
Everything from sharing platters and steak to fish dishes and salads are included on the menu and it was certainly a hard task choosing.
In the end I opted for bread and houmous to start and a butternut squash, goat’s cheese and spinach lasagne for mains. The dish came with toasted garlic bread strips and was absolutely delicious, though too filling to finish. The goat’s cheese and spinach combination in particular worked well but was very heavy, so I’d definitely recommend it if you’re especially hungry!
My friend meanwhile chose a starter of southern fried chicken breast with BBQ sauce, which he enjoyed and a steak and mushroom pie with chips and peas. The pie was perfectly cooked and the billowing pastry was a real treat - light and crunchy in all the right places. Indeed the overall experience was a pleasant one, and while dinner went down we enjoyed a glass of shiraz, which was a welcome addition.
It’s not a five-star restaurant, but if you want somewhere nice to relax and enjoy some freshly cooked, traditional food then the Slug and Lettuce, Brentwood offers everything you need. For details, visit www.slugandlettuce.co.uk or call 01277 232343.
