A BUILDING in Chelmsford has been named as one of seven winners of the 2010 RIBA Awards in the East of England.
The new Salvation Army citadel in the town has been praised as inspirational.
Designed by Hudson Architects of Norwich the building is constructed entirely of timber and cloaked in an undulating zinc roof.
The £2 million citadel provides 900sqm new accommodation for the mission.
Judges said the project illustrates commitment to pioneering modern methods of construction to maximize the potential of sustainable materials. The building is constructed using a cross-laminated timber panel system, which is akin to jumbo plywood and offers all the advantages of reinforced concrete construction without the environmental cost.
