Theatre review of the week

ladies down under review

By Eleanor Davies

When I was told to expect “a lot of comedy” and for it to “touch my heart” I wasn’t too sure what to expect of comedy drama Ladies Down Under, currently showing at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch.

So, I went along to see just what was so special about this sequel to the hit show Ladies Day.

Following their win at the races at Ascot, Pearl, Jan, Linda and Shelley embark on a once in a lifetime holiday to Australia.

As the lights went down and the curtain rose you really are drawn into their world. The first scene started in the airport and you soon figure out the different personalities of the characters; Pearl, the sensible mother of the group, lovelorn Jan, outrageous label obsessed Shelley and gentle Linda.

And they soon had the audience in the palm of their hand with their witty one liners. But it was the air stewards on the plane that got some of the biggest laughs of the night.

Like with any good film, you can’t wait to see what happens next and discover their secrets, and Ladies Down Under is no different.

When the curtain went down for the interval I couldn’t wait for it to start again to discover what Pearl was hiding and what would happen once Jan had found the man she thought had stood her up.

I won’t ruin it for you, I really do recommend you see it for yourself, because it is hilariously funny and the writing of the play you can’t fault.

And with an entire cast of just six actors they do a brilliant job of bringing the Ladies Down Under to life.

Ladies Down Under runs at The Queens Theatre, Hornchurch until 11 September. For tickets call the Box Office on: 01708 443333.
