Tennis players see the light

Gidea Park

THE Lawn Tennis Association has announced a £110,000 investment into Gidea Park Tennis Club which has helped to install state of the art telescopic floodlights across four of their courts.
The lights are almost unique as there is currently only one other club in the country using the system which offers first class artificial light.
For the members, it will mean a complete re-vamp of tennis over the next few months, with social tennis, squad practice and private bookings now having the facilities to continue right through the winter.
“We are delighted to finally have a four court competition-standard lighting system up and running,” said club Chairman Julian Lewis.
“The new lights have allowed us to extend popular summer activities such as social double leagues and practice nights which would previously have ended in September, into the winter months. The improved facilities have been especially welcome to our coaching team who have considerably expanded the junior coaching to increase participation by at least 40 per cent while the overall reaction from members has been fantastic, giving the club a great buzz and real confidence for the future.”
Matt James, LTA UK Head of Performance added: “We are delighted to have invested £110,000 in Gidea Park Tennis Club so that they can improve their facility to encourage more players to get involved.
“Improving and increasing the number of facilities for the whole community is an integral aspect of the LTA’s overarching plan for British Tennis.  We are committed to investing in grassroots and community tennis to grow the game and support the drive to create more British winners. ”
