Southend bouncers bailed while police investigate clubbing death

Reece Lamude

FOUR bouncers from a Southend nightspot have been bailed while police continue to investigate the death of a local man during a night out in the town.

Reece Lamude (pictured right), 37, from Rayleigh, died in the early hours of Sunday morning after an incident with door staff outside Churchill’s Bar, in Tylers Avenue. Mr Lamude was rushed to Southend Hospital but was pronounced dead at 3.35am.

On Monday detectives launched a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Lamude had sustained neck injuries.

Four men, a 31-year-old and a 37-year-old, both from Southend, a 31-year-old from Shoebury and a 41-year-old from Rochford, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday. On Wednesday police confirmed three men, aged 41, 31 and 37, have been released on conditional bail until 7 September while enquiries continue. Another man, aged 31, has been conditionally bailed until 1 July.

Further investigations and forensic tests are continuing to establish the cause of death.

Mr Lamude’s family paid a heartfelt tribute to the ‘fantastic father and warm-hearted family man’ who passed away in the early hours of Father’s Day.

In a family statement released on Monday they said: “Reece was a warm-hearted, hard-working, ambitious family man. He was a loving father, son, brother and fiancé. He was out celebrating a friend’s birthday.

"His life with his fiancé was just beginning. He was a fantastic father and it is ironic how he was lost on Father’s Day.

"At this time the family would ask that their privacy be respected and they be given time to grieve.”

Anyone who saw what happened or has any information about events leading to the altercation should contact officers at Southend police station on 0300 333 4444.

The way the above article is worded implies a totally different scenario as to what was involved. For clarification; The "several men" mentioned above were security staff at Churchills trying to deal with a customer who was allegedly totally out of order and violently attacked one of the door men after having been shown out the door.

@Chess Nelson 20/06/2011 14:58:17 - Does a 4 on 1 murder squad seem to be reasonable force to you? Very big boys at Churchill's, some real hard nuts. Any establishment that lets people drink until the very early hours should be professionally prepared for drunken behavior. These 'Bouncers' clearly were untrained and violent which resulted in a mans death.

Joe  20/06/2011 17:28:36

Chess Nelson, im sure Mr Lamude's poor family could do without your comment, they have suffered a huge loss at the hands of four over agressive and heavy handed doormen, i suggest you show some sensitivity and keep your comments to yourself in future.

The photo provided will make people pre-judge him as a hard man. It's just the way it happens. Put a photo up of him in a ball pit with 2 kids in his arms and he's a loving father. Put a photo up of him in a fairy dress and he's a gay. The general public who read and believe everything they read in the media will not even see past the photo.

menzie  20/06/2011 19:15:11

@Chess Nelson 20/06/2011 14:58:17 - Are you serious? I knew Reece, he was a great bloke and find it hard to believe that he was "totally out of order and violently attacked one of the door men" but I find it even harder to believe that somebody could write what you did - you fool!

Martin  20/06/2011 21:06:17

wouldnt surprise me if it was the doormen all the bouncers in southend cause trouble they need to rethink there jobs if they just wanna fight, its disgusting!! my thoughts go out too his family and children xx

sarah  20/06/2011 23:11:30

disgraceful behaviour i feel for the family why Should over sized gorilas be allowed to beat some1to death as part of there job. I hope who ever is responsible pays for there crime.rip

john tucker  20/06/2011 23:55:24

People should stop slagging off door men. they have a very tough job. i know 3 of the 4 door staff involved and know they are not the type to be 'heavy handed' possibly the most professional door men in the town. dont tar them all with the same brush please as these guys are superb at there jobs.

random  21/06/2011 13:11:14

My partner was a victim of being beaten up by southend bouncers and the cctv was apparently not facicing tht way at tht time so they got away with it, he never attacked no bouncer either, after they had smashed his face in they were all laughing, these bouncers need stopping!

southend  21/06/2011 14:55:53

Unless you were there and an eye witness then maybe everyone should let the police do there job before passing comment on right and wrong. If you were there then you should hold your tongue before you prejudice any trial and let justice be done. It maybe that not all these 4 are responsible, one poor man has lost his life don’t ruin the innocents lives with presumptions and rumour. Doormen are not all thugs and many are professional, that said some still are unscrupulous power crazed!!

Wife of a Doorman  21/06/2011 16:18:35

Yer lets all just blame the doorteam all bouncers are the same blah blah blah if you wasnt there dont comment !

fedupwithyourb##tcomments  21/06/2011 16:30:56

My son also had a run in with 5 bouncers at dukes chelmsford. Unecessary amount of persons on one individual.he thinks he must have passed out where he was grabbed around his neck and thrown down stairs.he was lucky but could have been paralysed.he reported it to police.these bouncers are a law unto themselves .I agree also that they need to be stopped.my son hadn't even done anything either ! It is disgusting the way they treat people.

deb  21/06/2011 16:59:58

I knew Reece for 16 years, Its a tragic loss to everyone who loved him! If the 4 doormen involved are found to be guilty then I hope that there locked away for the rest of there lives! real hard nuts beating a guy 4 on 1! just goes to show that the roid monkeys are just cowards who rely on power in numbers!

Jon H  21/06/2011 22:06:55

every1is slagging off door staff lets just stop a minute and think of this poor mans family and friends they dont need to be listening to stuff like this at a time of sorrow i hope the people responsible pay but my thoughts are with the family not the angry mob moaning about the doorman.sorry for your loss.

southend resident  21/06/2011 22:21:34

I think it should be made clear why the bouncers were having to restrain the man in the first place!!!!! Especially as he had been asked to leave by door staff and the police then returned! Think it's an unfortunate accident but the doormen were obviously doing their job and it's not worth their livelihoods to put a finger out of place.

Exgirlfriend!!  21/06/2011 23:03:02

Ex-girlfriend - shut up. Reece was a good bloke and you know nothing. Would he have a fractured wind pipe from an accident? I think not. RIP Reece, I hope the scum that did this to you pay for it - for once.

Sad girl  22/06/2011 14:32:26

If I'm honest, through my experience of churchills the bouncers are bullies! When ever someone require excorting off the premises the shock on how rough the bouncers was a shocker!! It shouldn't have got this far! The bouncers there are bully's and always likes to think their high and mighty. Let's hope they get their upcomance! RIP Reece thought to the family and friends!!

Shelley  22/06/2011 20:04:14

It was bound to happen sooner or later, People who have an unhealthy obsession with martial arts and fighting should not be working as door staff.

Daveangel  22/06/2011 21:23:42

Sympathy goes to family. One thing to remember here, why did it take 4 bouncers to restrain him. I know the guys involve and they would have only used that much force if he was being violent to them. These guys rely on their jobs and would not do anything to damage their lively hoods. Everyone can be angels but once drink is involved the devil creaps in and people are different. The answers is dont drink and misbehave, otherwise these unfortuante things happen.

unknown  23/06/2011 11:19:16

I didn't know Reece personally but I know people who do, one of whom was out with him on the night. I can't believe some of the comments on here! For those of you who know the doormen i'm sure you would like to think that they wouldn't intentionally harm someone, but in the cold light of it THEY HAVE! Regardless of how drunk someone is or what may or may not have happened prior, no one deseves to loose their life over it and children do not deserve to loose their father! What happened to Reece

tasteless  23/06/2011 15:36:24

does not happen 'accidently'. I notice the word MURDER is being used in papers etc and not manslaughter! You tell me then, if these people are who you claim them to be, that the latter word is not being used??? To try to make it look as if the poor guy asked for his life to be taken from him is tasteless! Get a grip!! Deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Reece. For the others try and show some respect or just don't comment.

tasteless  23/06/2011 15:44:24

I worked with Reece a few years back, he really was a top bloke and one of the funniest people I have ever met. My heart goes out to his family and friends for their tragic undeserving loss. I wasn't there and cannot pass judgement but I will say surely no matter how drunk & disorderly a person is they don't deserve this outcome. Those responsible must pay. RIP Reece you will be sadly missed by all those who were lucky to have known you xx

Smithy   23/06/2011 21:09:12

firstly, sympathy to the family of Reece, I did not know him but live in the area and have been to Churchills many time. You cant tarnish all bouncers with the same brush, yes a small minority of them are in the job to crack a few heads but alot of them are not. There is a few simple rules when you go clubbing, dont get too drunk, know your limits and if a bouncer does ask you to leave then do it.

joseph  23/06/2011 22:04:40

Reece is not a violent man!!!! my question is WHY THE HELL 4 BIG BOUNCERS TO 1 MAN!!! THAT ANSWERS ABOUT EVERYTHING... THOSE 4 MEN HAVE TAKEN AWAY A FIANCE A FATHER AND A HARD WORKING MAN FROM THE COMMUNITY!!!!! YOU ALL NEED TO STOP THE HORRIBLE COMMENTS, LET POLICE DO THE JOB AND THEN WHEN THE STORY UNFOLDS OF WHAT REALLY HAPPEN THEN MAKE YR COMMENTS CAUSE AT THE MOMENT U LOT KNOW NOTHING AND HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMMENT AND STOP MAKING ASSUPTIONS!!! R.I.P REECE YOU'LL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!!!!

BIGBOB  24/06/2011 11:13:45

I cannot comment on the incident but I have witnessed the bouncers' from Churchills use unnecessary force. I saw them knock a man out by throwing him to the pavement, completely unprovoked and conveniently out of range of CCTV. If this is the case now then I hope they all get what they deserve.

ANON  25/06/2011 08:52:59

Bigbob, if Reece is not a violent man. Answer this, why did he punch the bouncer in the face that night. Seems he is not such as innocent man.

anon  26/06/2011 12:50:40

Even if that is the case anon, he did not deserve to die over it, surely!!!

Tasteless  27/06/2011 22:22:15

It was bound to happen at some point!! I hope they all rot in Jail. The way I personally saw these guys treat a female patron (not a drunken girl) of their establishment gives me no reason to believe that Reece provoked them in anyway. This woman was badly man-handled, grabbed around the neck and dragged down the steps leading to the back of the establishment. Had Southend Police smaked them on the wrist 4 weeks ago this would probably not have happened. Was that REASONABLE force guys!!!!

The Saint  29/06/2011 14:03:20

The sad thing is another person has died. The legal fact is that door staff have to be trained properly and that is the responsibility of venue management. In addition, the Human Rights Act makes it a legal requirement that all agencies promote the right to life and the Corporate Manslaughter Act deals with those who don't. I'm an Expert Witness on this subject and to read my response in full to this go to: http://www.nfps.info/_webapp_281083/Door_Supervisors_Arrested_on_Suspicion_of_Murder

Mark Dawes  03/07/2011 20:59:40

So what is the outcome of it? Is it going to be another incident that goes quiet !

southend  23/07/2011 09:52:41

@Chess, I understand you saying that, these boucers have to put up with a lot of drunken abuse and attacks, but like the police they should be man and trained enough to deal with it in a proffessional manner ie protect all concerned including the drunken person. Unfortantley most (like 90%) of the bouncers I know and know of are in it for a good fight and scrap, If 'one of their own' as they would put it got hit Im sure the other would steam in!

MarK C  27/07/2011 18:16:38

He is dead let the poor man r.i.p. who cares who right or who is wrong the fact remains a man is dead that is uncalled for. you numbnut lot

NuckinFuts  03/08/2011 02:46:49

Whatever happened to quiet peaceful England? I was born -and grew up there, never had to worry about going out by myself after dark, locking house or car doors,no problems at school, did'nt know what mugging was, people polite, neighbor helped neighbor, no guns around, not even on the police.I used to go to the Penny Farthing and the through til two, problems - if any, dealt with by 1 bouncer, not a gang of thugs.Times really have changed, too bad.

valerie  29/08/2011 02:51:14

I worked with Reece at Aon in Romford. He was a very nice man, everybody liked Reece. This is a great shock.

anon  20/09/2011 00:01:07

The infamously violent and unregulated Southend bouncers are just the tip of the vile macho iceberg that makes Southend such a thoroughly nasty town. I'm so glad I found the train station and escaped.
