CHELMSFORD Borough Council is calling for all local history aficionados to help in their quest to gather rare, historical information and images of Admirals Park to be immortalised on two new visitor information panels, providing social and historical details.
One panel will be placed in Tower Gardens, and the other close to the weir at the end of Beach’s Drive.
The team is particularly keen to learn more about Rear Admiral John Faithful Fortescue, who once owned Writtle Lodge near the footbridge on the River Can and gave the park its name. This lodge was bequeathed to his brother William Fortescue after the Rear Admiral’s death and was demolished some time around 1848. They are also looking for information about a portrait of him, painted by George Romney.
The Council is also keen to trace information and/or old images on the Beach Family who owned and operated the water mill on the River Can before turning their hand to the brick-making industry.
If you have any information which will help contact a member of the Parks team on 01245 606496 or email mailto:parksservices@chelmsford.gov.uk.
