Quad man sentenced to two years

JamesLewisAn East London man has today been sentenced to two years in jail after his quad bike hit an on-duty paramedic causing serious injuries.

James Lewis  (pictured right), from Poplar attended Basildon Crown Court today and received a two-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to one count of causing Grievous Bodily Harm, one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving while disqualified.

The unemployed 28-year-old was riding a quad bike at speed down Western Esplanade in Southend on Sunday, 23 May when he lost control of the vehicle and ran over paramedic Victor Brushette.

Father-of-two Mr Brushette suffered multiple broken bones in the incident but has vowed to walk again after his injuries restricted him to a wheelchair.

At court on Friday, Senior Investigating Officer, Inspector Dick Thomas, said: “This was an avoidable tragic incident which has left a man, a paramedic, with life-changing injuries that he will find difficult to come to terms with it. However, I’m sure he will do so with the support of his family, friends and medical staff.

“James Lewis’ irresponsible decision-making has led to this situation and resulted in him being charged with several offences. I hope today’s sentence and the subsequent publicity sends a strong message to other motorists, making them think twice about committing foolish acts on our roads.”

James Lewis was also disqualified from driving for four years.

Essex’s Crown Prosecuting Lawyer Suzanne Stringer said: “This incident occurred on the hottest day of the year so far and the Western Esplanade was packed with people. Lewis had a total disregard for these people, especially the paramedic who he collided with, after making absolutely no attempt to stop or avoid this terrible incident.

“Fortunately the paramedic survived this crash; however he will have to live with the terrifying memory of this man driving towards him at considerable speed for the rest of his life. The only consolation is that Lewis has admitted his crimes which means the paramedic will not have to go through the ordeal of a trial. We are pleased this case has successfully concluded and we hope the paramedic can put this incident behind him.”
