Pirates sunk in both matches at the weekend

IT was another bad weekend for Essex Pirates they lost twice and remain at the bottom of the table.

Pirates were bitten in Yorkshire by Sheffield Sharks in a 77-101 defeat on Friday.

Sharks carried on from their British Basketball League (BBL) cup final win on Sunday, 17 January and led 22-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Forward Dean Williams and Haggai Hundert scored consecutive three pointers in an 8-0 run and another Hundert three left Pirates trailing 36-40 before Sharks recovered to lead 48-42 at half time.

Runs of 9-4 and 8-2 for the Sharks extended their lead and another 9-4 run saw Pirates sink to another defeat as Sharks took control.

Pirates were shocked by Thunder as they lost 85-09 in a close match at the Southend Tennis and Leisure Centre the following day.

The hosts started the match well and led 26-20 at the end of the first quarter but the lead was cut to a single point by Thunder and Pirates led 44-43 at half time.

Worthing then forged ahead and led 66-62 going into the final quarter.

With five minutes left Pirates levelled the scores at 72 all and were just a point behind with a minute and 54 seconds remaining.

However four points from Kadiri Richard opened up a four point lead from which Pirates never recovered.

On Saturday Pirates look to plunder the points when they travel to the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, tip off at 7.30pm.
