Essex could have its own Paula Radcliffe after a local school girl won the London Mini Marathon.
14-year-old Sophie Riches rocketed to victory in a time of just 17 minutes and seven seconds to grab the gold.
The 3 mile course would be a tough challenge for anyone but Sophie, who attends FitzWimarc School, held on to beat competition from across the country.
“It was hard but it was a great experience. The weather was really nice, a bit drizzly before my race but it kept dry for my run”, said Sophie.
“My family were there to support me and they were scattered over the course to encourage me.”
British long-distance runner Liz Yelling presented Sophie with her medal afterward along with a ’mini marathon kit’ that included jogging bottoms and a jumper.
Sophie now hopes to break her way into the English Schools team
