Football manager John Still looks set to be honoured by the council after his leadership helped Dagenham & Redbridge to their highest ever league position.
At a meeting of Barking and Dagenham Council on Wednesday night councillor Tony Ramsay - whose ward includes the team’s Victoria Road ground - raised the suggestion.
“In light of the phenomenal progress made by Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club with the club’s promotion last season to League 1 - when just three seasons previously the team was playing non-league football - I would like to ask the Leader if he would consider some recognition for the club's manager, John Still,” said the Eastbrook councillor.
Councillors were all in agreement at the meeting and Leader of the Council, Liam Smith, said after: “The entire council recognises the enormous contribution John has made to the borough - and not just in terms of recent sporting success.
“His record as Daggers manager for the last six years is up there with the best of them.
“It’s no exaggeration to say that without John Still it's hard to believe that our local football club would be half as successful as it has been in recent seasons.
“As a council we will now look into the most suitable way of honouring someone who is a football man through and through and who has been a tremendous servant to our local club and a credit to our borough.”
John Still took charge of the Daggers in April 2004 and in that time has lead the side to two promotions including last season’s play-off final win at Wembley which saw the Essex club promoted to League One for the first time in their history.
