Fashion Week

By Nicola Moyne

FASHION Week may be over – for another season at least. But the Autumn/Winter trends displayed on the catwalk are set to stay... and I’m not talking about the clothes.
Hair was a massive talking point this season, not least because it was so, well, strange.
I bagged myself a seat at the Danny Tang show and witnessed first hand how co-ordinated the tress and dress designs are, and how integral hair is to the overall event.
Emma Hodges, head of the Toni & Guy team who worked with Danny Tang on the show, created some amazing backcombed up-do’s and told In2: “With a focus in the contrasting textures, the old and new is fused and each model is playing a different character.”
Indeed, with slicked-back sides and bouffant middle-sections, the models’ – including former Britain’s Next Top Model contestant Jade McSorley – hair complemented the Gothic Victoriana theme running through the show.
Stomping along to a soundtrack seemingly made for an eerie slasher movie, the models showcased Danny’s love of puffball skirts, rushed shoulder blouses and netted dresses. Half masked by lace, the ladies did well to retain the dark mood of the collection, which predominantly worked black, red and gold hues together.
Tight plaits also featured in Emma’s creations for the catwalk, so make sure you look out for similar styles come Autumn!
However, the key trend seemed to be about creating a backcombed up-do, and Emma has some top tips on how to recreate this style.
“First, prep the hair with volumising mousse, such as label.m Volume Mousse and then blow-dry smooth, but with a natural volume,” she explains.
“Section off hair from the crown forwards and then take two sections two and a half inches wide on either side of the head and guide back into a ponytail to create a half up half down effect.
“Tong the hair that is left down at the back of the head in small sections and repeat on the front of the head in slightly larger sections for a looser wave.
“Finally, brush out the tonged hair at the front and guide it back and secure into the initial ponytail.”
