Gulls sink the Trawlerboys

Canvey Island 3, Lowestoft Town 1

CANVEY put a dent into Lowestoft's Ryman premier title challenge with a hard-fought win at Park Lane.

Alex Rhodes gave Canvey the lead on 12 minutes when he smashed home Bradley Woods-Garness' cross, but Lubomir Guentchev equalised for Lowestoft in similar fashion on 35 minutes.

Just before half time Canvey re-took the lead in spectacular style, with Bradley Woods-Garness scoring an incredible overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area from Jason Hallett’s cross.

It got even better a minute later when new central midfield signing James Comley did brilliantly to muscle his way to the touchline before finding Jay Curran unmarked in front of goal who in turn slotted the ball home

Canvey started the second half brightly, and went close to adding to the scoreline through Jason Hallett, Jay Curran, and Rob King.

However, it was the visitors who scored the next goal of the game on 66 minutes when half time substitute Adrian Forbes delivered a pin point cross onto the head of Chris Henderson who finished expertly.

The Gulls had further chances to restore the two goal cushion, with another new signing in winger Dean Mason shooting wide having burst through the Lowestoft defence with electric pace.

In the dying moments Lowestoft hit the crossbar through Henderson, but Canvey managed to clear the lines and claim an impressive and fully deserved victory.
