Your wedding song will probably become the most evocative memory from your wedding day. Wherever you are, whenever you hear that song, you will think back to that magical moment when you danced with your partner for the first time as husband and wife.
But how do you know which song is the one for you? And how does the perfect song now compare to what couples would have chosen years ago?
“We chose Morning Has Broken as our song,” says Sharon Phillips (pictured below), who married her husband Richard in December 1973. “The reason behind the song was that it is a really uplifting song and makes you notice all the things around you that you don’t always notice.
“The first line Morning has broken, like the first morning means that every day is a new day and you can look forward to the future,” says the bride from Thurrock. “Our wedding day was exciting, happy and wonderful.”
With 37-years between their wedding days, it comes as no surprise that newlyweds Mat and Vicki Brummitt from Braintree chose a slightly different song for their first dance: Greatest Day by Beverley Knight.
“We chose the song because it was upbeat, catchy and is a feel good song with meaningful lyrics,” says bride Vicki (pictured right). “It matched the exciting and happy feel of the day.”
But Mat’s favourite part of the song was the very last word, as he explains: “I was definitely out of dance moves and I could feel the eyes of the room watching with high expectations!” he laughs.
So, it looks like both the times and music have changed over the years. But what are the top tracks at the moment?
“Everything I Do by Bryan Adams is probably the most popular song choice for first dances,” says Gary Hartgrove from the Essex Weddings DJ Company. “Amazed by Lone Star is also popular and is probably the one which has stood the test of time.”
