AN end could be in sight to the continuing problem of demand for pupils to go to a popular school. Thurrock Council is looking to spend £2.5 million on expanding Chafford Hundred Primary School. The council’s cabinet agreed to launch a consultation and put the money into the capital programme when it met on Wednesday evening. Portfolio holder for education, Cllr Diana Hale, speaking afterwards, said: “I spoke about this at the last meeting of the council. Every year it seems we have the issue of too many parents wanting their children to go to this school and every year we have to disappoint many of them.” Chafford Hundred Primary currently has permanent accommodation for 360 pupils with two temporary classrooms for 60 more. If the proposal by cabinet goes forward, it will be expanded to take a total of 630 children. Members were told that grant funding for expanding the school was available to the council. An initial consultation with stakeholders — including staff, governors and parents along with neighbouring schools and community groups — will be held over the summer, reporting back to cabinet in October which will then decide whether to go ahead with the expansion.
