Club shines again in national event

MedalsBILLERICAY-based Yushikai Karate Academy took part in the JKA England National Karate Championship recently held at the Elmbridge Xcel Leisure Complex in Walton on Thames and attracted competitors from all over the country.
A large contingent of children and adults from the academy were in attendance, all very nervous as for many, it was their first time competing.  Yushikai had a tough task ahead as they set a national record in 2008 by winning a total of 26 medals, and head coach (Dave Paulus) was looking to improve on last year’s performance.
Things got off to a good start with Yushikai clocking up 13 medals in the Kata (forms) events that morning.  All representatives performed to a very high standard and handled their nerves very well.
After a short break, the Kumite (sparring) events started with the club looking to secure a further 13 medals to match last year’s result.
When the dust had settled after a very long day, Yushikai had secured another 22 medals in the sparring categories, achieving a 2009 total of 35 medals (13 Bronze, 11 Silver and 11 Gold).
JackThe icing on the cake was when National Chief Instructor (Ohta Yoshinobu Sensei) presented Yushikai’s Jack Taylor (right) with an award for Best Male Competitor after he had secured two gold medals and become the 2009 Grand Champion.
Yushikai Karate Academy’s Chief Instructor, Dave Paulus was delighted with the results.
He said: “Going into this year’s event, I never really believed we would improve on last year’s result.
“Having said that, the whole squad have trained very hard and have given up their Saturdays for the last seven weeks to attend additional classes.
“They did me proud.”
JKA England General Secretary, Tony Cronk joked about Yushikai’s performance, saying: “I think we will only allow Yushikai to send three competitors next year to give the other clubs a chance to win a medal.”
