Britt's back

She’s one of the most iconic movie stars of the twentieth century, famous both for her love life as well as her films. And this week, former BritBond girl Britt Elkand, will be revealing all at the Broadway Theatre in Barking with her new one-woman show An Audience With Britt Ekland.

Now a Patron for the Alzheimer’s Society, Britt is returning to the stage, telling tales from her childhood and her big break right through to her doomed marriage to Peter Sellers and her subsequent relationships with Lou Adler and Rod Stewart.

And when I caught up with the Swedish bombshell at her home in London last week, it was clear that she has absolutely nothing to hide and isn’t afraid to be brutally honest.

“I’m Swedish, so I was born honest,” smiles the legendary beauty. “It’s a fact that we can’t lie. And to me, dishonesty is the lowest form of communication.”

Indeed, I got the feeling that there wasn’t anything Britt didn’t want to share – including her disbelief at her famous ‘sex symbol’ and 70’s ‘pin-up’ status.

“I never thought of myself as a sex symbol,” laughs the 67-year-old. “I’m just lucky that I come from a very healthy background and my father was a sport fanatic. I’ve always liked the outdoors and just enjoy being fit and healthy.”

It’s clear that Britt has kept herself in good shape over the years and she admits that this is partly due to her fitness regime with her pet Chihuahua, Tequila.

“Tequila comes with me on stage wherever I go and I always make sure we do a half hour power walk every morning,” says the mother-of-three. “So I enjoy working out – but I also enjoy pink champagne! It’s just about making the right choices in life.”

However, some of Britt’s earlier choices in life have indeed come back to haunt her. Famously marrying actor Peter Seller in 1964, after knowing each other for just 10 days, the romance didn’t last and it wasn’t long before Britt’s first failed marriage was plastered over the newsstands.

“I think you’ve really got no choice but to just deal with it,” says Britt, when talking about how she coped with the bad press at the tender age of 22. “A lot of young people don’t realise that fame is something that you need to nurture and look after and even though I haven’t had a good track record in my life, I know that I’ve always told the truth.”

And Britt will be revealing the whole truth at the Broadway Theatre in Barking this Saturday with her new show ‘An Audience with Britt Ekland’.

“It’s a show that’s based on my life,” says Britt, who has already been touring across the UK. “All of the audiences have been really lovely so far and although it is very tough doing a one-woman show, people seem to be enjoying it and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”

And audiences will even get the chance to ask Britt their own personal questions after the second half – and she’s ready for whatever is thrown at her!

“We’ve seen some very interesting questions so far,” she laughs. “I’ll be interested to see if the same questions come up in Barking.

“Instead of just looking me up on Google, people can get the live version instead,” she jests. “Perhaps it will be a great comparison for them and see what Google has got right!”

Don’t miss An Audience with Britt Ekland at the Broadway Theatre on Saturday 6 June at 7.30pm. For tickets call the Box Office on 020 8507 5607.
