For many impersonators meeting the inspiration behind one of their acts is all but a distant dream, except that is, for Martyn Lucas.
He’s been doing impersonations for over 10 years and on 12 July 1997, he was lucky enough to meet the King of pop himself, Michael Jackson.
“He was in London for The History World tour and I was doing impersonations of him at the time,” Martyn tells me. “A lot of people ask me what he was like and my only answer is - real. You look him in the eye and he’s just a man, like everybody else.”
And for Martyn, following the untimely death of the singer just over a year ago, incorporating him into his current show, One Night in Vegas, was a must.
“We only recently decided to put a section dedicated to him in the show, and have been given a world exclusive for it,” he says. “Michael Jackson will actually appear on the screen behind me and we sing together.
“This show is our biggest yet,” he adds. “We’ve been touring for four years and have a world famous orchestra, Las Vegas show girls and lots of singing and dancing.”
One Night in Vegas shows at the Palace Theatre in Southend on 8 July. For tickets, call 01702 351 135.
