Peterborough Panthers 51, Lakeside Hammers 42
HAMMERS, missing the injured brothers Jonas and Daniel Davidson, fought a rearguard action from the start in Monday’s Sky Elite League fixture at Alwalton but in the end, having also lost Paul Hurry on the night, came up short.
It was nevertheless a brave effort from the depleted Hammers, who had former Hammer Joonas Kylmakorpi back on board as a guest replacement for Jonas Davidsson, who had failed to recover from the head and neck injuries sustained the week before in Poland. His brother was missing as a result of two falls in Friday’s home victory against Eastbourne.
Hurry made three starts in the early stages but then took no further part in the meeting.
Peterborough surged into an early lead, with maximums in two of the first three heats before Adam Shields sparked a Hammers revival with a win in heat four and Lee Richardson did the same in the following heat. Unfortunately Stuart Robson and Kauko Nieminen, who went on to have a disastrous, pointless night, finished last in the two heats so Pirates didn’t make up the gap.
By the start of heat seven Hammers were 24-12 behind, allowing Shields to go for double points and with Kylmakorpi trailing in his wake a superb team ride saw Hammers grab and 8-1 to put them back in the meeting.
However, though there were three more heat wins to follow, Hammers could never quite get back in touch, but they did enough to keep a sparse crowd on their toes about where the extra point might go, but in the end the home side prevailed as heat leader Kenneth Bjerre led them home with a paid maximum.
Hammers now have two away trips, to Coventry next Thursday and Poole on Wednesday, 14 June before a return to Lakeside against Belle Vue on Friday, 16 June.
Peterborough: 1 Kenneth Bjerre 14+1; 2. Troy Batchelor 9+1; 3 Rory Schlein 11; 4 Krzystof Buczkowski 6+3; Niels-Kristian Iversen 5+1; 6 Mathieu Tressarieu 3; 7 Norbert Kosciuch 3.
Hammers: 1 Lee Richardson 11; 2 Kauko Nieminen 0; 3 Joonas Kylmakorpi 10+1; 4 Rider replacement; 5 Adam Shields 13; 6 Paul Hurry 1+1; 7 Stuart Robson 7+1.
